Listening?

Listening?

What’s the point of these music listening sessions?

There are already so many opportunities and media for listening to music, why add to the list?
Initially, to create a special link between my former students and music, and to maintain contact with those who want it. Then I added to the recipients of the first issues my students in training, my friends, my family…

The original idea was to invite my students to take some time out each week to sit down, with their parents, and listen to music for 10 to 20 minutes, without doing anything else, preferably sitting comfortably with their eyes closed, with no teaching involved, just for the pleasure of listening to music together.

Where did this idea come from?

In the summer of 2022, I met up with my friends Eulàlia and Jordi in Catalonia, and Jordi told me that every Friday they got together with a brother and a cousin to listen to and watch a concert on a music channel. I thought this idea of sharing was brilliant and I imagined I could share these moments with them, but it wasn’t that easy.

I retained the idea of sharing a ritualised listening time.
Then I realised that my pupils hardly listen to any music apart from contemporary music, and I thought of offering them these short listening times.

Evolution of the proposal

I began by sending my programmes to a group of students, which quickly grew to include the recipients mentioned above. When I reached more than 50, with almost no return or acknowledgement of receipt, I reduced my mailings to those who expressly wrote to me that they wished to continue receiving them.
My list has dwindled, but there are still some loyal readers!

Now that I’ve reached issue 13, I’m changing my format to include it in this blog, where anyone can subscribe or unsubscribe as they wish. The advantage will be the possibility of a wider dialogue for all subscribers.

Long live music!

One thing’s for sure, since I started this broadcast I’ve been listening to a lot more music than I used to! Thanks Jordi!

This has led me to do some research into the works presented, the composers and performers, and to suggest some links to deepen everyone’s knowledge, at least those who have time to spare, as my recent retirement allows me to do…

The only downside is the importance of the screen in this sharing.
So always start by listening to the audio recordings with your eyes closed…

I hope you enjoy listening to these recordings as much as I do, and that this blog will be an opportunity to exchange ideas through the comments you leave at the bottom of the articles…
