{"id":5900,"date":"2025-07-15T22:55:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T20:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pigyki.fr\/?p=5900"},"modified":"2025-07-17T18:46:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T16:46:41","slug":"musical-listening-n66-pierre-schaeffer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pigyki.fr\/index.php\/en\/2025\/07\/15\/musical-listening-n66-pierre-schaeffer\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical listening n\u00b066 Pierre Schaeffer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) : <strong>the father of concrete music<\/strong>.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cListening means giving attention to everything that sounds\u201d.<br><strong>Pierre Schaeffer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Schaeffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pierre Schaeffer<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the passing train, the rustling of paper, and the sound of the wind become sound material, an invitation to listen differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, I must clear up a confusion I myself had: musique concr\u00e8te is not performed live with everyday objects or tools, diverted from their usual use to create a musical discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These objects are recorded, then worked on, dissected in the laboratory to build a bank of \u201csound objects\u201d later used in musical compositions. These initial experiments were based on \u201cconcrete\u201d sound bodies rich in acoustically sourced vibrations. He was also a radio man, founder, and director of numerous services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out more about the titles followed by * at<br><strong><em><a href=\"#\u00e9l\u00e9ments\">\u00ab\u00a0To find out more \u2026\u00a0\u00bb<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is concrete music?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Decidedly acoustic, concrete music seeks its <strong>material in sound bodies, whose sound is captured by a microphone and generally manipulated after recording<\/strong>, either mechanically (by editing or varying playback speed) or electrically (by filtering frequency spectra and amplification).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Concrete music <em>is not<\/em> electronic music, where sounds are artificially produced and do not exist in nature. <\/strong>However, a strong link developed between these two currents in the 20th century, with musical works simultaneously using techniques inherent to both genres, leading to <strong>acousmatic<\/strong> music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did Pierre Schaeffer say that concrete music \u201cwas not music\u201d?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pierre Schaeffer invented musique concr\u00e8te not as a style but as an experiment in listening. He wanted to ask: <strong>\u201cWhat is music if we no longer work with written notes but with recorded sounds?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his early works, he observed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many concrete pieces remained collages of sounds without clear musical language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There was sometimes a lack of emotional and poetic structure linking the sounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This research was exciting but did not always produce what he considered \u201cmusic.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cWhat I did was not music, it was research that asked the question of music.\u201d<br><strong>Pierre Schaeffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><br>He therefore preferred <strong>to continue thinking about and teaching listening<\/strong>, leaving other composers to extend musique concr\u00e8te in various artistic directions, notably one of his first collaborators:&nbsp; <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Henry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pierre Henry<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Pierre Schaeffer\u2019s catalog of compositions is relatively small, and in retrospect, his works may not really be intended to be listened to as musical works. Born in 1910, he first pursued technical and scientific studies and worked as a telecommunications engineer and sound technician from 1934 before considering a composer\u2019s career. His professional experience, combined with basic cello knowledge, allowed him to create his first musique concr\u00e8te works, including Cinq \u00c9tudes des bruits in 1948, followed by the direction of the Groupe de Recherches de Musique Concr\u00e8te (GRMC) from 1951 to 1953, later renamed Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and merged in the 1970s with the Institut National de l\u2019Audiovisuel to form INA GRM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He intensified his theoretical reflections, which he had begun very early, at the expense of his musical practice, notably to determine his conception of music: Schaeffer believed that Western music deprived itself of an important sphere by focusing on traditional instruments and thus on fixed pitches. His questioning of traditional instruments and the listening experience associated with Var\u00e8se, Cage, and Messiaen informed his professional evolution toward composition and working on sounds in concrete music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"objets\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Described by M\u00f6ller as Schaeffer\u2019s \u201cmajor work,\u201d Study of objects\u00a0\u00bb can be interpreted as \u201cthe result of research on domestication possibilities\u201d and constitutes Schaeffer\u2019s last major composition. He did not place much importance on his own compositional practice and continually questioned his abilities as a musician. It represents a succession of several small studies, after which Schaeffer completely abandoned composition for a long period. The work argues that it should represent the conclusion of the composer\u2019s musical vision, resulting in \u201ca complete revolution in the composer\u2019s craft.\u201d To achieve this, only original sounds collected over the years were used, which were only edited, mixed, and transposed at most.
