En primer lugar, por su voluntad de romper e incluso oponerse a los \u00abdictados\u00bb de los partidarios de la escritura serial y dodecaf\u00f3nica, de los que Boulez era ardiente defensor.<br>Inspirado por Debussy, sus colores y la escala hexatonal que le gustaba utilizar, Ohana desarroll\u00f3 un estilo que utiliza una escala de 1\/3 de tono. Revelando un lado mucho m\u00e1s l\u00edrico de la personalidad musical del compositor, esta obra de seis movimientos toma prestado su t\u00edtulo de los poemas m\u00edsticos y monodias del rey Alfonso X \u00abel Sabio\u00bb del siglo XIII, conocidos como las Cantigas de Santa Mar\u00eda. El cuarto de los seis movimientos, \u00abCantiga del azahar\u00bb, combina el texto de tres poemas de Alfonso con una monodia que se le atribuye directamente. Los otros cinco movimientos utilizan textos de cuatro poetas de la Edad Media y el Renacimiento.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Con el conjunto instrumental desempe\u00f1ando un papel secundario, la obra explora un estilo vocal que debe mucho a los repertorios vocales medievales y renacentistas que Ohana estudi\u00f3 en la Schola Cantorum. Gran parte de la estructura interna del movimiento sigue patrones responsoriales y antifonales, lo que es particularmente notable en el quinto movimiento, que alterna vocalizaciones contemplativas y sin medida de una contralto solista con material m\u00e1s extrovertido, medido y homorr\u00edtmico del coro y el conjunto. Muchas de las texturas contrapunt\u00edsticas evocan el car\u00e1cter de la polifon\u00eda renacentista, aunque el pr\u00e9stamo de ciertas t\u00e9cnicas asociadas a este repertorio (trope, conductus y cantus firmus) s\u00f3lo se explora en sus obras posteriores, en particular Chiffres de clavecin, Silenciaire, Office des oracles y la Messe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reflejando el car\u00e1cter musical de las monodias originales del rey Alfonso en las que se basa Cantigas, Ohana se inspir\u00f3 en las propiedades mel\u00f3dicas de los cantos moz\u00e1rabes, gregorianos, sefard\u00edes y almu\u00e9danos, todos ellos asociados a la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica y que ejercieron una profunda influencia en las formas mel\u00f3dicas de la m\u00fasica popular espa\u00f1ola. Aunque las texturas organum no se explotan tanto aqu\u00ed como en su m\u00fasica vocal posterior, el paralelismo es una caracter\u00edstica de muchas texturas homof\u00f3nicas. Existe una distinci\u00f3n impl\u00edcita entre los tonos anotados enarm\u00f3nicamente, en un intento de apartarse de las convenciones, si no de las restricciones, del temperamento moderno. La belleza lenta y solemne de la melod\u00eda, cuyo texto alaba a la Virgen, crea una atm\u00f3sfera de pureza y contemplaci\u00f3n po\u00e9tica. El hecho de que \u00e9ste sea el \u00fanico movimiento sin dedicatoria sugiere quiz\u00e1s un significado particularmente personal para el compositor.
