{"id":5292,"date":"2025-05-17T16:33:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T14:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pigyki.fr\/?p=5292"},"modified":"2025-05-17T16:33:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T14:33:45","slug":"the-discipline-in-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pigyki.fr\/index.php\/en\/2025\/05\/17\/the-discipline-in-question\/","title":{"rendered":"The discipline in question"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-c29ac5d9-6326-4fac-9951-1896942f68bf\">Do authority and discipline have a place in the Willems<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> pedagogy?<br>If so, at what level?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The question of discipline in introductory music lessons comes up frequently in training courses. It is often asked by young, inexperienced teachers, which is only natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1d16a089-7458-4c64-b072-cbb9fd594689\">The aim of this article is not to provide magic solutions to difficulties that are as varied as the situations and people involved.<br>Rather, the idea is to ask our readers to share their thoughts and experiences, and tell them that they are not alone in being (or having been) confronted with these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8c985e19-f7f6-4d63-9e56-332643c28e57\">Having worked in nursery and primary schools, I&rsquo;ve seen how children can completely change their behaviour from one year to the next, when the teacher changes. The teacher&rsquo;s attitude seems to be to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We sometimes see teachers completely overwhelmed by their pupils, even with small numbers and at a very young age. At other times, we get the impression that the teacher exudes a kind of &lsquo;natural authority&rsquo;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To open up the debate, I&rsquo;d like to suggest a few ideas\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-1808416a-1159-44bb-9888-0c3a9b9c1c99\">Observe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-bee94dac-2f23-460d-b868-b05cef294877\">Young teachers often know more about music than they do about child psychology.<br>Sometimes they are so keen to share their love of music that they forget the steps that the child needs to take to reach the same level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to observe the child closely, and the child in the group.<br>This enables us to identify the child&rsquo;s current needs, which are sometimes far removed from the current activity, and to assess how best to meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3fa3ec4a-e449-40ff-874f-d8c5fc519fb2\">But while the teacher is &lsquo;observing&rsquo;, who is conducting the lesson?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-94e0ce52-d41e-4502-b70e-f71e8a71dd6c\">Naturally, this observation develops over time\u2026<br>The ideal tool for making progress is video: film your lessons, then take the time to watch them, either on your own or with someone more experienced.<br>But that&rsquo;s not enough to solve all the problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silence! &#8230; ?!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2947f6d4-c8ac-4837-8a7e-847bb3704fd0\">Learning requires peace and quiet to encourage concentration, and in the case of music, a lot of silence to encourage listening to sound!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0ca3497b-f01f-4680-8d5c-d1208a63fdfb\">It may therefore be tempting to impose silence as a prerequisite for activity.<br>But this does not guarantee the quality of listening that we hope and pray for.<br>Nor the active, inventive and joyful participation we hope for!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it may be tempting to rely on the appeal of music to get the pupils to join in and participate actively and constructively.<br>But since everyone reacts differently, it&rsquo;s not certain that the music will be heard or that the most timid will find it to their liking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-cad82beb-7147-43ad-92b7-7e28b3f941ea\">And what about Willems?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-37f6bdc1-547d-4f9f-87dd-b5fff9e868c2\">Jacques Chapuis, Founding President of AIEM-Willems, recounted how the song \u00ab\u00a0Le g\u00e9ant\u00a0\u00bb was born of an unexpected situation to which Edgar Willems responded in his own way:<br>One day when he entered the classroom, he found his pupils standing on the table (it was a small group). Instead of scolding them, he exclaimed \u00ab\u00a0Oh, giants!\u00a0\u00bb, and began to improvise the song \u2026 which we still use today as a reference for the Tierce mineure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-650f7170-5e12-4648-ab40-2a0e27cbd3f1\">Questions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8d45c7f6-047f-4b5e-bbb8-f948a3368e10\">So should we always try to &lsquo;musicalise&rsquo; every situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does observing children&rsquo;s needs lead to satisfying all their desires?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacques Chapuis often said, \u00ab\u00a0Children are superior to adults in terms of their potential\u00a0\u00bb.<br>Does this mean that children are always right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-bad10630-93a4-48a0-a922-9304af107d0a\">And what does this \u00ab\u00a0natural authority\u00a0\u00bb referred to above consist of?
